close Norman v Faldo, Federer v Nadal, The Q Clash
Time and time again, sport throws up rivalries that make even the most distant sports fans sit up and watch. There is no better spectacle than watching two giants do battle. So when Division C5 of the Adelaide Footy league pitted the Hope Valley's C grade Juggernaut against a bunch of 'lowly, pisshead-20-something-cupcake-should-be-playing-A-grade-fuckheads' it promised to be a titanic struggle the likes of which we'd never seen before.
Having only suffered defeat at the hands of one another, both teams came into the game full of confidence, though it could be said the Blacks had the better of the most recent encounters. A perfect day and a wide deck made the initial stoushes fast, and highly skilled. Both teams were able to move the ball up the ground with speed and skill, but it was the Blacks who were able to make the most of the opening forays, going into quarter time 2 goals the better.
From there on, midfield dominance led by Johnston, Bell and Hill fed the ball to our best movers and we were able to control the game. The trouser-stirring half-back line read 'Evans, Crouch, Ball; and repelled all but the fastest of Hope Valley ventures forward dominating the marking contests.
A common theme for the year was 'Beat your Man', and by three quarter time every single Blackman had done just that. The game was a realisation of the work done by the Bastards to improve their games, and to that end it was a performance not characterised by sparkling highlights from star players, but of a cohesive machine who knew it's working parts inside and out.
It was dominant, and at times processional. Hope Valley's star players were quelled by a combination of close attention and a loss of discipline, although their captain showed respect and class both during and after the game - in what was his 200th.
The slow realisation of what had been achieved began soaking in during the last quarter, we'd done it. Celebrations were suitably large- a three day bender with the greatest of mates- all played well and all handled themselves the way Bob intended.
After the final whistle, Bastards of old and those less acquainted with the team would note that everyone looked like they belonged. This statement in particular filled the coach and captain with unbridled joy, for they set out 4 years ago to create an environment of enjoyment and cohesiveness, and one that would attract only the highest calibre of young men.

This mantra was honed, and staunchly protected every weekend, as well as at the selection table, and endured many 20+goal shalackings. Footballing prowess would come later. Those who've played, get it. Those who look in, envy it. To play as a B@stard is an honour, and something you should all be proud of. It extends beyond the 25, you all know you belong.
Couldn't be prouder, you're all truly great men and the flag hanging in our kitchen is a constant reminder of what's been a wonderful time with an exceptional bunch.
