close The B@stards ventured souf for the final minor round game of Season 2017 with one thing in mind, stitching up the Minor Premiership. SAAFL Div C5 pundits all across the state agreed that this was to be no cake-walk, for Woodville Souf were coming home with a wet sail, and were much improved team from the first half of the draw.
The early signs were good, with the captain elect (and don’t you forget it Fraser Thomson) choosing correctly for just the second time this season and electing to bat, with a breeze stiffer than his hammies. The tactically brilliant Glorious Leader then chose to throw a spanner in the Woodville Works by starting as a spare on the wing instead of the half forward. This sent the Soufs into disarray and resulted in us having two spare attacking players on the fat side for the whole first quarter. Masterstroke. Some hard running and composure by foot saw the Blackmen start quickly – booting the first 5 goals of the game. Probably the highlight of the first quarter was my delicate lob through ball (L1 + Triangle for you FIFA fans out there) to Howes to set up goal #3. Cheers.
Was it the breeze? Was it complacency? Lethargy? Are Woodie Souths actually good? Whatever it was, the second quarter was a stark contrast to the first, with Soufs piling on 4 unanswered goals thanks to some clunking marks and poor decision making by foot from the Blackmen. When Jordan went down, Good Evans delivered a timely spray and urged his comrades to slow the game down and play some smart footy to arrest the momentum. An unnamed player (me) swiftly proceeded to kick the ball straight into the corridor for a quick turnover goal. Things were not good.
A re-calibrated bastards unit ran out after half time with a much clearer game plan and an added focus on beating their direct opponents first and foremost. The midfield unit led by Ted, Daniel and Hilly gained the ascendancy over their direct opponents, bringing our best users into the game. @Evo and Collett were able to move the ball into our forwards in the manner which we’re accustomed to and it all began to click again. But for some inaccurate goal kicking (2 goals 5), the quarter belonged to the Blacks.
Early in the last quarter, a lack of any definitive bodywork allowed their tall marking targets to once again dominate proceedings- and it looked like the wasteful 3rd quarter was coming back to bit us on the Tommy Hass. Some gritty contested footy and a willingness to keep the footy allowed us to hold firm and withstand a fast finishing Soufs as we held on by 11 points. Overall; a mature effort. Not our best footy, not near it, but an ability to control the tempo in crucial parts saw us win out in a game that has all too often gone begging in seasons past.
Good onya fellas. Who’s keen for some froffies this weekend?
