Round 7 (on paper) loomed as a significant challenge for the B@stards, taking on the undefeated Golden Grove (Kookaburras..?) in a location far, far away. In his first ever journey north of Grand Junction Road, Ty Wundenberg arrived fresh and well prepared, debuting a new pair of Umbro boots… a daring choice of footwear for any occasion, let alone one 25kms north of the Adelaide CBD.
Speaking of fresh… Tom Bell. After a long night of baking, and feeling as green as the oval itself, Tom’s body arrived at Harper’s Field at 11am, while his mind arrived at some point midway through the first quarter. An admirable effort from Belly to even remove his sunnies, let alone contribute the way he did in the first quarter. How good are choc chip cookies?
Belly’s mellow pregame performance was somewhat countered by Tom ‘the hot streak’ Chalk, who came bounding into the change rooms keen to let everyone know that he snagged another Friday night victim, and that the heater well and truly continues… No one cares Tom (but please keep telling the boys). Good luck in the office on Monday morning :)
The first quarter was a romping, with the B@stards kicking a rude 6.2.38 to Golden Grove’s 0.0.00. Led by a dominant midfield, the B@stards peppered the forward 50 with Jordo and Arny the main beneficiaries. Can someone please remind Jordan that he’s 6’7 and playing C5 football? He shouldn’t be kicking check-side goals on a weekly basis.
Big Reyn and Bater were unfortunate first quarter causalities, and played no further part in the game.
The second and third quarter were tightly fought, with the back six seeing more ball than the previous 6 weeks combined. Fraser Thompson was important at full-back, winning a number of one-on-one contests against his satisfactorily skilled opponent.
Lead by Shopov and Curry, the pressure and tackling around the contest was pivotal to maintaining control of the game. Despite copping a corky early in the 3rd, Bally filled Big Reyn’s shoes beautifully in the ruck, giving the mids first use of the ball time and time again.
Although the bigger, older, dumber, slower, angrier Kookaburra’s did provide some minor headaches throughout the game, the B@stards ran out comfortable 79 point winners on the day.
Women’s Weekly was lively up forward all day, and despite having ‘the licence’ to roam back and help out his defenders, didn’t see the need to venture into that half of the ground. A real show of confidence in your teammates to get the job done down there, right Weeks?
The 3-time league medalist was back at his best – proving impossible to tackle and elite by foot. Jordo and Arny were damaging on the scoreboard slotting 4 goals each for the game, while the defensive pressure of Shoppy and Curry shouldn’t go unmentioned.
